REBRANDING
Strategic reframing of a heritage perfume company
In 2004, I was commissioned to rebrand Monix for the first time (you can see the previous rebranding here). Nineteen years later, in 2023, the brand changed hands and the new owners from Silicon Valley (USA) and Santiago (Chile) hired me once again to rebrand Monix while preserving the legacy built over decades. The challenge was not reinvention, it was continuity under transformation. The project focused on evolving the brand with authenticity, balancing heritage preservation with contemporary relevance.
BRAND ARCHITECTURE
To enable category expansion while protecting Monix’s brand equity, a masterbrand architecture was developed, safeguarding the brand’s authority while enabling strategic extensions and ensuring historical continuity, clear product organisation, and brand coherence.
Level 1. Masterbrand: MONIX
Level 2. Brand Extension: Monix Home
Level 3. Collection: Vintage Collection. Fragrances with history.
Level 4. Product Level: Individual fragrance names.
Supporting System. Fragrance Taxonomy: Ten fragrance family identifiers used to guide product navigation and reinforce perfumery culture.
BRAND IDENTITY SYSTEM
A modular identity system was developed to ensure consistency across packaging and communication. The system includes:
Primary logo:
The Bauhaus-inspired logo designed in 2004 functioned as a powerful recognition asset. Rather than replacing it, the logo was refined to enhance typographic balance and geometric precision. A subtle compositional adjustment, repositioning the black square, introduces modern tension while preserving brand memory. The result is an identity that evolves without breaking continuity.
Secondary logo:
Iconography system consisting of ten fragrance family identifiers, and an Origin & Care badge reading “Handmade in Chile with love”.

Monix is strategically positioned as a historic Chilean perfume house with decades of heritage, recognised for its consistently high-quality fragrances and the care conveyed through every product. The brand connects personal experiences and meaningful moments with consumers’ olfactory memory, evoking emotional memories for those who grew up with Monix while creating new ones for today’s generations. Its purpose is to become part of people’s everyday lives, their personal stories, and the moments they treasure in their memories. The strategy positions Monix not only as a perfume brand, but as a cultural signifier embedded in personal and generational memory.
STRATEGIC PILLARS
Heritage as authority and continuity. The 1938 foundation anchors the brand’s authority, transforming historical legacy into generational continuity. Heritage is framed through nostalgia while highlighting the brand’s mastery and enduring legitimacy.
Fragrance Education. A structured fragrance family system educates consumers in the culture of perfumery, transforming the consumer from a “buyer” into a “connoisseur” while demonstrating the brand’s deep expertise and reinforcing its authority.
Timeless Modernity. Inspired by Bauhaus and refined for contemporary expression.
Indexical authenticity cue. An Origin & Care Seal reading “Handmade in Chile with love” was introduced as a recurring brand signature across products. It expresses the brand’s artisanal soul and Chilean origin, highlighting the human care embedded in every product, reinforcing authenticity and national pride.
Emotional Engagement. The brand connects olfactory memories with meaningful moments, creating a personal and emotional bond with consumers and transforming each fragrance into a unique, memorable experience.
BRAND NARRATIVE
Beyond visual identity, Monix required a structured narrative framework to reinforce its reimagined identity. The framework focuses on evoking nostalgia through sensory triggers rather than direct product promotion, positioning fragrance not merely as a product, but as an emotional catalyst connected to lived experiences and generational continuity. By emphasising memory and emotional resonance, the narrative strengthens loyalty among existing users while reinforcing the brand’s heritage positioning for new audiences. Copy acts as a sensory trigger, engaging olfactory memory, emotional recognition, and cultural continuity, reconnecting consumers with the experiences and moments linked to Monix fragrances.
Example narrative direction:
Because we were part of your story… of those unforgettable moments
We meet again… with your timeless fragrances
Do you remember this scent? Unique moments… memorable fragrances
A night out? Unique moments… memorable fragrances
Friday on the terrace? Unique moments… memorable fragrances
